Undaunted by three legal challenges to Initiative 164, supporters of capping the maximum allowable interest rate on title and payday loans at 36 percent held a press conference Sept. 2 on the downtown Walking Mall to kick off the campaign to get it passed.
The group included two state senators, representatives of the public schools, AARP, Montana Human Rights Network and the Montana Community Foundation, an attorney, and two small-business owners.
“Senator Lewis and I don’t agree on everything, but we do agree on this. Four-hundred percent (interest) is too high,” said state Sen. Christine Kaufmann, D-Helena.
State Sen. Dave Lewis, R-Helena, said he “hesitated a bit” when first approached to support I-164. “As a Republican, I don’t usually support more regulation, but this is the right thing to do,” he said.

U.S. Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., is soliciting comments from Montanans about how to find a workable solution to the status of gray wolves under the Endangered Species Act. In early August, U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy of Missoula put the gray wolf back on the Endangered Species List, which Rehberg called “usurping control from local and state authorities.”

In an emergency meeting held Sunday, the board of directors of the Big Sky Tea Party Association voted to remove the group's president, Tim Ravndal of Townsend, after learning about comments he posted on a personal Facebook page in late July that seemed to advocate violence against homosexuals.

“What would Wendell Barry say?,” I asked myself as I listened to a guest commentator on Montana public radio Aug. 16. I still had a ways to get home when the guest began to rant his opinion on the Kearl Transportation Project and its environmental impact statements created to analyze rebuilding a port in Lewistown, Idaho, relocating utility lines underneath existing road rights of way, and putting rotation devices on street light and signals. Oh, yeah, and adding pull-offs to the side of roads and holding traffic for 10-minute intervals until the trucks and their cargo moved onto the next pull-off to let traffic pass.

Recently Kristi Allen-Gailushas, in an article light on factual information and heavy on conservative political rhetoric (QCN, Aug. 11, 2010), made several accusations about the proposed Health Enhancement Curriculum for Helena schools, including that the school board wants to “indoctrinate” and “push their views on” the children.

Charlotte, the “Canadian Thistle,” is a non-native, yet hardy, species determined to survive despite adversity. She has worked hard in the past 10 years to establish herself as a performing songwriter, overcoming many obstacles and building a reputation for her catchy melodies, dry wit, sass, “muscular” guitar playing (according to the regional publication Victory Review) and her engaging stage presence.
