To the Editor:
Over the summer, the green beans abounded in the Food Share Community Garden, and the squash and tomatoes nearly took over the entire garden. Volunteers came from across town and from the neighborhood to help weed, water, and harvest vegetables, and, in return, they took home as many veggies as they needed through the Volunteer for Veggies program. The vegetables that were not claimed by volunteers were donated to Food Share – more than 400 pounds of veggies over the course of the summer. Thank you so much to everyone who volunteered. The garden was a success, thanks to your hard work and dedication.
The Food Share Community Garden is part of the Growing Community Project, a project of WEEL (Working for Equality and Economic Liberation). We partnered with Helena Food Share to build a community garden on Food Share property. It was built entirely by generous donations and dedicated volunteers. It is a place where anyone can access healthy and affordable food, and it is a source of fresh veggies for Food Share in a time of growing food insecurity.
The eligibility for food stamps has changed. Please call the Office of Public Assistance (444-1700) to find out if you qualify for the program or could receive more.
