One solution to food costs
by Layna George
Wednesday, June 11, 2008

To the Editor:
I went grocery shopping this past Sunday, and I was floored by the total. I looked over my receipt, thinking there was some kind of mistake, but, no, that really was the cost of the food. I just hadn’t really paid attention until it was all added up. It’s making me wonder if my food stamps will last until the end of the month.

I know that hundreds of people in Helena have the same problem, but there is an easy solution: community gardens. Community gardens create easy, affordable ways to grow your own food, and it is a great way to share resources and knowledge with fellow gardeners. EBT food stamps can buy seeds at Real Food, and vegetable starts are available at the Farmer’s Market.
The Growing Community Project has recently built a community garden right next to Food Share. All of the materials for the beds have been donated by very generous people and businesses. There will be communal tools available at the site for gardeners to use whenever they choose, and there are some donated seeds that our gardeners are welcome to use as well. There are about 16 plots available at the Food Share Community Garden for a minimal fee. If you are interested, please give me a call at 495-0497.
