Victorian thought hinders public debate
by Troy Ford
Tuesday, March 04, 2003

To the Editor:
After reading your most recent issue of the Queen City News, I was appalled to find that people felt that it was morally depraved for people to protest in the nude. The thought that it is un-American to protest against a president who is “trying” is the work product of smarmy neophytes.

This brings me to two conclusions: first, people in our area seem to be enveloped in Victorian-era thought when nudity was believed to be wrong. Finally, these people have too little intellectual perspicacity to understand the framers’ thoughts on the importance of public debate.

The thought that nudity is wrong is arcane. If we look at cultures where this belief is not held, we see dramatic decreases in the occurrence of rape and other sexually deviant crimes. Based only on correlation, it is an obvious, albeit possibly fallacious, conclusion that people who think nudity is bad are those who are more likely to commit crimes of sexual impropriety. Foregoing this somewhat naive view, we do know that cultures that are more sexually open tend to be happier and have fewer occurrences of mental illness associated with repressive thinking due to these social constructs.

Finally, those who believe those who protest or support protests against the actions of a tyrant to be un-American are, on the whole, holding opinions inconsistent with the Constitution and the idea of a free society. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “Those who would give up essential freedoms for security, deserve neither freedom nor security.”
