Students in Sarah Alling-Huber’s poetry class at P.A.L. include ShayLee Perry, Jason Rushford, Courtney Smith, Rachel Riitano, China Wendell, Jay Watson and Rowdy Wysocki. Here are some of their poems:
“Riddle Poem”
by ShayLee Perry
Creeping shadows
Breakless silence
Barely moving
Transparent breathing
Half-remembered
fantasies
The break of dawn
Kills all the beauty.
(Answer: Sleep)
“Tears We Shed for Virginia Tech”
by Jason Rushford
Stars and stripes
this we take pride
for the men and women who died
Young men and women
of Virginia Tech
we are truly sorry for this mess
I too cannot rest
knowing no one will be brought to justice
It is sad to see
all of you in grief
others watch and gaze
as you move on in a haze
but we must move through this maze
It is hard for me
to take this as a reality
that some man goes on a killing spree
I am happy to say we are free.
“YOU!”
by Courtney Smith
Sing, dance, love
Hope, dream, smile
Don’t let anyone
Put you down
Because you are special
Special to me
You mean the world to me
And just to let you know
I am always going to be here
In mind, spirit, and soul
So don’t give up on your dreams
Keep them close to your heart
I am always here to help
Make you smile, make you laugh
So don’t you forget
That you are never alone
Even if you can’t see me
You are not alone.
“Penguin”
by Rachel Riitano
As the penguin
climbed on
the top of
The ice
First the legs
Arm
Slowly
Then penguin
Stepped down
Into the wetness of
The wet
Water.
“Big N”
by China Wendell
It is
Near impossible
To hear
Nature
I’ll say it again
Nature...
With a big “N”
All of these
Man-made
Reliant
Bits and pieces
Cars, Cash, Fast food
A distressing emotion
Sinks in while I ponder
Hmm...
On a lighter note
The smell of the grass is sweet
The breeze is
Uplifting
The Sun!
Vital
Warm to touch
Essential to growth
Nature
With a big “N”
“Homie”
by Jay Watson
Not a dawg or a dogg
He’s my homie
He’s a cool cat in a blue hat
He has my back
Like a turtle to its shell.
“Hopelessly Lost”
by Rowdy Wysocki
I feel hopelessly lost in pain and sorrow. There’s nothing I can do I can’t get away. It won’t let me go but it won’t let me stay. I fear for my life in this time of day. For the darkness is growing around me. I can’t get it to stop because it won’t go away. All it will say is good day.
