Local boy's artwork inspires toy box for Iraqi hospital

Thursday, June 30, 2005

A local boy’s artwork sent to his father in Iraq has inspired a decorative toy box for use by Iraqi children at a hospital near the Balad Air Base.

Second-grader Kelly Craigle, 7, recently sent his dad, Major Scott Craigle, a colored drawing of some flowers. Craigle, who lives in Clancy and usually works for the Helena National Forest, is flight chief (and a bionuclear hazard specialist) for the 332nd Expeditionary Aerospace Medical Squadron at Balad Air Base.
Kelly’s mom, Mary Craigle, said the colorful flowers from her son’s picture were chosen to decorate a wooden toy box for children at the Camp Anaconda Hospital in Balad. On the box is written, “Inspired by Kelly Craigle, age 7,” and “A child’s laughter is the best medicine.”
The box was painted by soldiers stationed at the air base, filled with crayons, coloring books and other toys, and taken to the hospital so injured Iraqis would have something to play with.
“He’s young enough that he doesn’t really comprehend the whole thing,” Craigle said of her son. “He’s like, ‘Oh cool, they made it into a picture. Now can I go play?’”
Craigle’s husband was also the subject of a recent story posted on the Air Force’s website at www.af.mil/stories/story.asp?storyID=123010673. Entitled “Bio shop provides peace of mind,” the story discusses how Major Craigle’s squadron tests drinking water for contamination before it’s consumed at the air base.
Craigle’s group performs quality assurance tests on bottled water shipped to the air base from several plants. According to the article, they also monitor other environmental aspects at the base including the soil and air, in an effort to enhance health and safety.
