Kick-a-thon and board break bash benefit
by Dave Krainacker
Wednesday, May 25, 2005

Nearly 40 students from Frederick’s American Taekwondo Academy recently gathered in the parking lot by the Good Samaritan Thrift Store in a benefit for Helena Industries.

Ranging from beginning white belts all the way up to advanced third-degree black belts, students engaged in a kick-a-thon and board break bash. For the kick-a-thon, students raised money by doing at least 1,000 kicks individually against a practice bag. The board break bash was a group event and involved the entire school breaking a total of 1,000 wooden and plastic boards with kicks or hand strikes.
Helena Industries has been serving disabled area residents since 1970. The mission focus since its inception has been to provide those with severe disabilities real jobs that produce goods and services with significant value to the consumer and the worker with a paycheck and pride of accomplishment.
Helena Industries employees work in a wide variety of fields, primarily producing textiles and wood products. Bulk mailing, janitorial and high-volume paper shredding round out the services they provide.
Doing a benefit for Helena Industries seemed like an ideal fit for the local Taekwondo Academy, said school instructor and third-degree black belt Elena Frederick.
“We admire the philosophy behind Helena Industries of helping people to help themselves,” she said. “Taekwondo is guided by a Korean philosophy known as Songham. Central to its tenets is to take responsibility for one’s actions and to help others. This benefit not only allows us to help a worthy organization, but also gives our students a chance to truly practice the Songham spirit.”
More than $3,000 was raised during the event. Those wishing to find out more about Helena Industries may call 442-8632.
