The Carroll College Performing Arts Department is presenting its fall children’s production of “Crow and Weasel” Wednesday, November 17 through Saturday, November 20, in the Carroll Performing Arts Center, at 7 pm.
Written in Native American storytelling style, the play focuses on two youths in a tribe of High Plains animal people. The two protagonists, Crow and Weasel, are sent on a vision quest, during which they encounter many dangers while exploring North America, from the Great Plains to the wilderness to the tundra and back. Along the way, they meet many new faces, including other tribes who don’t speak their language, and through dance and storytelling, Crow and Weasel learn to communicate across cultural barriers. As the journey proceeds, the characters learn lessons about wisdom, truth and friendship that speak to children and adults alike.
“The play explores the vastness of our country,” says the play’s director, Cathan Bordyn, a Carroll College Performing Arts graduate. “It’s a coming-of-age play that also explores friendship and maturity.”
Carroll student Kevin Harrington plays the role of Crow. Harrington was part of the cast of Carroll’s spring 2004 mainstage production of “Godspell.” Carroll Performing Arts graduate Megan Sprankle will appear as Weasel.
“Crow and Weasel” is based on the book of the same name by award-winning author Barry Lopez. Playwright Jim Leonard, Jr., adapted the book to the stage. The Montana Book and Toy Company will offer copies of Lopez’s book for sale at evening play performances in the Performing Arts Center.
Tickets are $5 general admission and $3.50 for students and seniors. For tickets, call the Carroll box office at 447-4304.
