The Senior Babe Ruth All-Star Team recently played their state tournament in Belgrade, placing first in state. They were undefeated through the entire tournament, tackling the Western Montana, Bozeman and Belgrade teams.
The Helena Senior All-Stars have remained undefeated since winning the first-place title during the Fourth of July tournament held in Helena for the All-Star League.
Playing for the Helena Babe Ruth All-Star Team were: Greg Anderson (LF/P); Nick Bruno (OF); John Brown (3B/C); Kris Doughty (C); Jake Harris (1B); Kiel Hutchison (SS/P); Pat Lindeman (CF/SS/P); Dilan Saisbury (OF); Matt Spangler (2B/P); John McEwen (1B/P); Aaron Schedel (1B/P), and Erik Winfield (RF/P).
During the State Tournament games, solid pitching performances were displayed by Hutchison, McEwen, Lindeman and Saisbury, helping to keep Helena undefeated. Batting efforts by all team players included John Brown hitting two home runs for the tournament.
IF/OF defensive plays by Spangler, Brown, Anderson, Winfield, Schedel, Bruno, Harrison and behind-the-plate performance by Doughty ended the season with the title of “Helena Senior Babe Ruth All-Star State Champions.”
Coaches for the Helena Babe Ruth Senior All-Stars were Herb Lay and Gary Hutchinson, along with Pitching Coach Bob Winfield.
After winning the state title, the team headed to Klamath Falls, Ore., for the 2003 Pacific Northwest Babe Ruth Tournament. This was the first year that Helena participated in this tournament.
Helena played against the All-Star teams from Idaho, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon. They won the two games against Idaho and Oregon and lost the two to British Columbia and Washington, taking third place in the Northwest Regional Tournament.
